Background

The Fearless class destroyers built in the 1967 and 1968 programs were essentially a repeat Electra Class. The main change was that the position of the boat hangar and Sea Slug missile launchers were reversed, putting the vertical launch silo at the point where the ship's motion was most limited. The hangar was enlarged to accommodate a rotodyne rather than a helicopter.

Originally it was planned to build eight Fearless class but the new Gallant class was available and offered dramatic improvements over the F class. The Admiralty therefore decided to re-order the last four F class as part of the new G class. Construction of the F class proceeded quite slowly and the last ship, Ferocious took almost six years to complete.
